Rhulani Insights 239 – Flying termites

Look behind the scenes of Rhulani Safari Lodge.

Today it seems we have been caught in a small snowstorm. Snow in Madikwe? Impossible. The rainy season has just started and that is the time when the termites swarm out to form new colonies. Let's talk to Ranger Willem about this unique phenomenon.

Willem tells us that at this time of year the termites grow wings and we actually see the "flying termites".

The trick will be to survive this mission in the face of many dangers and, on the other hand, for male and female to meet in order to form a new colony.

An ant on the move does more than a dozing ox.

- Lao Tzu, Chinese Philosopher

However, on our long journey we have seen millions of these flying termites, so it is very likely that at least some of them will be successful and the annual cycle will repeat itself this time too.

Stay tuned for the next episode on 15 December when we watch from the hide how elephants precisely drink the fresh water.
