Rhulani Insights 232 - A ring barked tree

- Rhulani Insights, Ranger's Blog

Look behind the scenes of Rhulani Safari Lodge.

Ring-barking or girdling are terms used to describe the complete or nearly complete loss of bark from around the circumference of a tree or shrub's limb or trunk. Ring-barked trees can also be seen in Madikwe Game Reserve when you go on safari. Today, let's take a closer look at such a tree with our expert Willem.

As we learn today, bark is vital to the survival of trees, transporting nutrients from the soil through the roots up to the branches and leaves. If this transport line is completely interrupted, the tree will die.

Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.

The beautiful Marula tree in today's blog has suffered quite a bit of damage because of the elephants, who love the bark, but in this case there is still hope that it can recover.

Stay tuned for the next episode on 8 September when we have an elephant in camp.
