February Update: Madikwe’s most beautiful colours

February was a wonderful month for us and our guests. Besides continued spectacular wildlife viewing the scenery was just fantastic. In the second half of the summer, nature is green and the sky light blue.

And it was because of those colors that Madikwe offered countless opportunities for wonderful wildlife photographies. Our rangers remember various beautiful encounters with the Makloppa female lioness and her three cubs.

In addition, there were fascinating sightings with predators on a kill. Among others, three times we saw eating lions, and even a leopard was found in the typical pose with a kill in the tree, like on the postcard.

The wild dogs, one of the characteristic animals from Madikwe, were not often seen in February, but once we just found them when they had killed a kudu, which was an absolute highlight.

Once again the elephant is leading the ranking of “frequent sightings of big animals or dangerous predators”. On each game drive there was a chance of 87% to see this largest land mammal.

White rhino (60%) and lions (71%) were found more than half of the time. The leopard, which is of the “Big 5” the hardest to find, reached with a 20% probability a good result.

Beside the animals classified as “most attractive to see”, there are always numerous occasions to spot further game. Giraffe was found in 3 of 4 drives, with the same frequency as the black-backed jackal. A bit more luck was required last month to discover cheetah, spotted or a brown hyena.
